Fight the Landlord is the English name for Dou Dizhu (斗地主, dòu dìzhǔ), the card game played on more phones and kitchen tables in China than any other. You may also have heard it called Beat the Landlord, Fighting the Landlord or just the Landlord card game. Play it here free in your browser, with no download, no app and no sign-up.
Play against two computer players at the level you choose, or start a private table and send the link to friends. The host can fill an empty seat with a computer player.
Fight the Landlord is a game for exactly three. The 54-card pack, with both jokers, is dealt 17 cards each, and the last 3 cards go face-down in the middle as the kitty.
Players then bid 1, 2 or 3 to become the landlord. The highest bidder turns the kitty over, adds it to their hand to hold 20 cards, and plays alone. The other two are the peasants: they play as a team, and if either of them goes out first, both win.
Normally you can only beat a play with a higher play of the same shape: a pair with a higher pair, a run of five with a higher run of five. Two plays break that rule. A bomb, four cards of the same rank, beats anything that is not a bomb, and a higher bomb beats a lower one. The rocket, the two jokers together, beats everything, bombs included.
On this table every bomb or rocket doubles the stakes for the hand, and so does a spring, when one side goes out before the other has had a real turn. That is why a hand of Fight the Landlord can swing so far.
Suits do not count. Cards rank 3 (lowest), 4, 5 and so on up to K and A, then 2, then the small joker and the big joker at the top.
