Dou Dizhu (斗地主, also written Doudizhu, and known in English as Fight the Landlord or simply the Landlord card game) is the most popular card game in China, and you can play it right here in your browser — no download, no app and no account needed. It is a 3-player game played with a 54-card deck: the standard 52 cards plus two jokers.

Each hand, one player becomes the landlord and plays alone against the other two, the peasants, who work together. The landlord gets three extra cards, but has to beat two opponents. That imbalance is what makes every hand of Fight the Landlord tense.

How a hand of Fight the Landlord works

  1. Deal. Each player gets 17 cards. Three cards are set aside face-down as the kitty (底牌).
  2. Bid for landlord. Players take turns calling landlord. The winning bidder becomes the landlord and takes the three kitty cards, for 20 in total.
  3. Lead and follow. The landlord leads with any valid combination. Each player must beat it with a higher combination of the same type, or pass.
  4. Bombs and the rocket. A bomb (four of a kind) beats any normal play, and the rocket (both jokers) beats everything.
  5. Win. The first player to empty their hand ends the game. If it is the landlord, the landlord wins alone; if it is either peasant, both peasants win.
